DANCER...TEACHER...CHOREOGRAPHER
I love to dance, whilst listening to a piece of music something happens…something stirs inside me that I just have to bring alive through the visual art of dance. My passion now lies within the Belly dance genre and I am very much in love with Fat Chance Bellydance® and American Tribal Style Bellydance® created by Carolena Nericcio My stage names is Horizon, It just seems to fit, because of the spiritual connection with the earth, sky and planet. When I step onto the stage something magical happens to me, almost as if I evoke energy, I don’t think, i don’t analyze I just dance!
My favorite style of dance is when I have fire in my hands, it is as mesmerizing to dance with it as it is to watch it...There are so many props that can be integrated into fire belly dance and I love both the sound the flames make when you move and to the warm energy it shares with you. |
WHY I DANCE?
As a child I studied Ballet, Ballroom, Jazz and Music Theatre at The Academy of dancing and Performing Arts. G.C.S.E. and A ‘level Performing arts followed and then a BA Honors Degree (Contemporary dance major). In 2004 a friend (thank you Leah) introduced me to Tribal Belly dance of Rachel Brice and I was totally mesmerized! My studies include Raqs Sharqi, American Tribal Style (FCBD) and Tribal Fusion with some really amazing teachers includes Amy Sigil from Unmata and Tjarda from the Uzume. Both have inspired me to follow my heart and fuse my love of Contemporary and Jazz with Belly dance. Other amazing dancers I have attended workshops with are; Heather Stants, Samantha Riggs, Rose Harden, Jesse Standridge, Dawn O’ Brien, Pauline Q, Darkstar, Molly from Desret, Silviah and Frederique. ALso Les Soeurs Tribales, Sharon Kihara, Anasma & Shannon Marlott Conklin. Every the student I am now concentrating my studies on American Tribal style FCBD® and Improvised Tribal Skirt after being inspired by Divine Chaos Tribal. My ATS® mentor is Christine Akula Tribal, she has taken both me and my tribe under her wing and we are very grateful and honoured to be dancing with her. There is a huge amount of support with the UK Scene and i thank everyone who helps and guides me along this new path, big thank you to Jesse Sandridge, Philippa Moirai, Deana Lawman, Denise Piggins and Catarina for always taking the time to answer my questions. I am forever a student and am striving to become a master in the art of ATS, I love dancing with my tribe and the larger dance community! |
TEACHING
I have been teaching for 6 years, my regular classes are in Hitchin, North Hertfordshire. Due to the diversity of my inspirations I have taugh a variety of styles. This has ranged from American Tribal Style Belly dance FCBD®,Gypsy Fusion Belly dance, Contemporary & Jazz inspired Tribal Fusion, 25 yard skirt, Can-can & Fire Dance throughout the UK. It's been an honor to sharing my love of dance with others, leaving me feeling very lucky and blessed to have dance in my life. Inspiring others to dance is an amazing experience.. In 2011 I felt the invisable pull towards ATS®, American Tribal Style®, I love how dancers can create choreography live on stage! I am very much enjoying mastering the beautiful art form that is always evloving, i love the dance vocabulary and format that Carolena Nericcio has developed since the late 70's. It is a very intelligent dialect and i am in ore of how dancer communicate with body language to speak to each other while dance. Late in the Autumn of 2011 I decided that it was time to focus on ATS® and with the full support of my students we began or jouney focusing 100% on the FCBD sylibus. In 2012 the creation of Affinity Tribal and the continuing student performance troupe The Azimuth and introduction of props such as Sword and Skirt which we now also perform with the FCBD vocabulary and even the fusion of it with Fire dancing. In 2011 I also set up a regular monthly class for Cancan for those interested in learning the lost art of the Cancan and also as a chance for my performing troupe to meet regularly. More details about my classes can be found here for both ATS® and CanCan. |
Choreography...For as long as I can remember I have made up dances, when hearing a piece of music which inspires me I start visualize a few moves and then that develops into a full choreography. Since studying Belly dance the dances I have created range, from Contemporary Tribal fusion, Gypsy skirt Belly dance, Jazz fusion, Cabaret Pastiche and Fire Dance. The reason that my dance repertoire is so diverse is because the music that inspires me is so diverse. Never knowing where my next inspiration will spring up, it keeps everything organic for me. Being Artistic Director to Imajica Dance Company from 2008 to 2012 provided me we so many wonderful opportunities to perform & teach in so many different styles. Now I have Affinity Tribal who concentrate on American Tribal Style® and ATS® Choreography in Sword and Skirt, The Can Can Collective and Girls on Fire plus my student troupe in ATS®,The Azimuth. It really is something to bring to alive my ideas, my dancers are totally committed, work so hard and are always willing to try something new. Their energy, in the rehearsal studio and on the stage is something quite magical, so I want to take this opportunity to thank them, without them I would just have a brain full of ideas.
