What is Tribal Style Bellydance?

Tribal style bellydance is a very modern form of dance which roots stem from America in the 1970's and is now a dance style performed all over the world. Tribal Style bellydance today represents everything from Folkloric inspired dances to a fusion of ancient dance techniques from North India, the Middle East and Africa. As a general category, Tribal Style covers many flavours of Belly Dance both the folkloric and fusion and cross over styles which explore modern, jazz, dance theatre, and hip hop with belly dance, as well as fusion with traditional classical ethnic dance forms like Bhangra, Bharata Natyam, Flamenco and now even Polynesian and West African Dance.

What is American Tribal Style & Improvisational tribal Style? (ATS & ITS)

American tribal style is a cue lead group dance vocabulary that is performed as an improvisational follow the leader format. The group of dancers work together with the set dance vocabulary and change the roles of leader and followers while on stage. This both an exciting style to watch and to perform…dancers almost create magic on stage with the connections we see and feel and often  audiences are left memorised but what they see. There are now a variety of formats to follow from Fat chance Bellydance, Gypsy Caravan, and Black Sheep Bellydance to very modern version of ITS from dance companies such as Unmata and the Uzume.

What is Tribal Fusion?
Tribal fusion is a very modern form of belly dance, a fusion of body isolations layered with a core movement vocabulary associated with bellydance. Tribal fusion gives the dancer freedom to pull together movements from various dance styles and blend with their own bellydance vocabulary. There are numerous styles currently being performed around the world to name but a few are Gothic fusion, gypsy fusion, flamenco fusion, hip hop fusion, contemporary fusion to physical dance theatre.

Tribal Style Bellydance with Horizon

My dance style is a fusion of a love of the improvisational group dance format and the freedom of expression that tribal fusion offers to creating exciting choreographies and combo’s that can be added to improvisational dance. Drawn to the energy of gypsy fusion bellydance and to the beautiful elegance of contemporary fusion these are the two styles which I teach in class. I am an eternal dance student and am often pulled towards what the music ‘speaks to me’ Working in this very organic way I feel I can be very creative and work with my student to explore their inner rhythm, opening up to a internal passion and express that though the medium of dance.
